Scheherazade -- poetry by Lauren Williams

if animals could speak

how they would plead

when caught in a trap!

like foxes from folktales

praising our lovely furs

and our clever work

and praying to claw through the ropes

when our eyes turn away.

so i felt with you-

your talons out above my throat

and i thought, stupidly,

i could use my words.

Lauren Williams is a high school senior living in that nor’easter hotspot, Massachusetts. She enjoys going on long runs, writing short poems, and baking cookies. When she isn’t daydreaming, she’s quaking in her boots about college admissions. She plans to publish poems in her school’s literary magazine, The Quill.
